orientation

I'm real happy with the way this one is wrapping up. The machine stitching is just what it was wanting but now I'm torn about the final orientation of the piece. This happens to me a lot. Is it arrogant to think that if a piece is successful, design-wise that it should be as good no matter what the final orientation is?

On the left is where I started. I only named this non representational  piece "Demon" because that piece of black damask was a pure pill to nail down and maintain it's originally intended shape.

Now look..there's a serpent under a tree full of fireflies.

The different orientations certainly have different moods. The vertical with the orange on top is the most abstract, with a nice rhythm from the green shape into the black, and a quality of rising up; I feel that the other way around falls to the bottom too much. The horizontal has a narrative quality, with the black "fish" moving off to the left, followed by the green "snake"; it's quite whimsical, even with the black. I think it works either way––green on top or to the right––depending on the feeling you want to convey.

I like the serpent idea, great colours and textures.

How fun to be able to turn a piece different ways and view it from other perspectives. Another very strong one!

I love the serpent and the tree of fireflies. I was at an outdoor concert years ago and we sat under a tree filled with fireflies. Your piece just remined me of that thanks! Diane

I like the top orientation as it gives that ominous demon looming impression, but the flip makes it a totally different feeling, trees and stars? amazing how the mind can interpret and see different moods in one piece

i like the bit of green on top with demon in middle, etc. will be interesting to see which way you finally orient the piece.

The small shape "chasing" the larger
black one reminds me of the tiny birds who are
now chasing larger ones from their
nests these days. I like how the orientation changes what it the
work says.
