Back in my nest.

We had a full week together including a New Year's Eve party.

I had forgotten how uncomfortable I am in large gatherings. It's not a case of being an outsider, I just max out my tolerance for noise and ruckus early. I'm the one you see sitting on the porch in the dark. Or watching an old black & white movie in a spare bedroom. Or teaching the kids to play poker.

We orbited each other a lot. Both of us in thrall of some sort of Christmas stuff, especially Ms. Nibbler. I kept calling her Devil.  So full of feist!

She climbed up on the bed a bit each bedtime and at daybreak. Today she spent long minutes pulling that scrunchie out of my hair. Then tucking herself in beside me to run her ratchety motor.

She has some very puppy moments, chasing and fetching, and acting all bad like a Halloween cat when you leave the room or psssst at her for begging at (or climbing on) the dinner table. All in all, a charmer. And, Jude, mark for mark, she seems to be a carbon copy of Soul-o.

And this one, gliding the concrete hills and valleys so confidently. His teacher told him that falling and getting hurt is inevitable. I would never have imagined this was something that he'd gravitate to, but he seems to love it. Mothers like to dim the memory of the risky crap their grown kids were up to. No such pass for Nanas.

I can relate to the finding a dark quiet spot when the house is full of people! The descriptions of the new kitty belong somewhere. I mean, in addition to here. Precious. Vivid. And as for skateboarding, when D asked the orthopedic surgeon how many times he’d inserted pins in a broken arm, he said “it’s in the 1000’s.” Then told us he’d done four that morning. “Fourteen is the average age.” And if you remember, D broke that left arm the second time when he was still in the splint for the first break.

skateboards are right up there as the reason I wasn't assigned boy mom duty back in the day ... although our girls still managed to need transportation to the doctor's office and/or ER on occasion

Kittens fascinate me. The wild state before they figure out life with humans. Colin broke his arm skateboarding and rebroke it while it was still in the cast...bowling. I'm grateful Charlie's parents found a good teacher and take his safety gear seriously. ...I still remember the tiny boards with the noisy metal wheels I rode fully believing I was safe if I stayed on the double yellow line. I finally gave it up when patterned pantyhose snagged badly on scabs.

By the time Jake took up BMX biking, I had checked out watching entirely. To my shame, he managed to hide most injuries (including a broken bone in his foot). Soon to be 40 brought his bike to the skate park and showed us that he's still got what it takes. Terrifying.
