Cleaning out old stuff from the pantry, I found an ancient box of oatmeal that had a lovely colony of cooties living in it. Do you know anyone else who gets excited over buggy oatmeal? I didn't think so.
A large seven-gore skirt and a short sleeve blouse, both white linen, were just waiting in the wings for such an opportunity. I'll see how they look as garments before dismembering them. One of my favorite cotton shirts was born this way.

Eyew...but how clever of you.
OK, I'll bite. How does that work?
I put the oatmeal in an airtight container with a very small quantity of dye powder...several colors, close the lid tight. this is very off-label use of dyes, so be warned. Shake like mad. the dye powder sticks to the oatmeal and I sprinkle it over the cloth that has been wet down with soda ash solution. Bundle it up and let it sit, preferably in the sun. Shake out the oatmeal, wash and dry. All of this is outdoors and I still wear a mask.
Amazing! Thanks for the explanation.
