I've been missing this place for two weeks now. Not that I went anywhere. The house has. I miss its cozy wildness. But the truth was being hidden by all that overgrowth. At long last, I faced the truth and did what had to be done.
The grove out front was drastically cut away, leaving two mature trees that are now festooned with dead and dying ivy. English and Poison.
Replacing the wood siding was beyond my budget by a mile so, vinyl is final.
The gutter guys were walking around on my roof at 7:30 this morning. It remains to be seen if the shrubbery has caused damage to the foundation. A good day of rain with the new gutters in place will reveal if that last step has to be taken.
It's a blank slate and I'm still reeling a bit. On the upside, I love a blank canvas. For the first time ever I will have a sunny growing space under the three kitchen windows and along the south face of the house. We plan on building some decking out on either side of the front landing. The stone face needs power washing and probably paint.

like having a totally new house without the hassle of moving … have fun with that blank slate (and fingers crossed for the foundation)

I've been reluctant to replace the wood section of our mostly brick house with vinyl siding, but it would be very nice not to have to repaint it every few years, and have it look awful for the last year or two before we buckle down to get it done.
You inspire me to make that replacement!
this is amazing! beautiful "bones" in this home of yours! I'm familiar with the unsettlement caused by changes. The foundation issue, check. Paint versus new siding, check! I'm calling my home projects "deferred maintenance"! Blessings to you!
I always like a lot of greenery around a house but your clean slate is really tempting. The house has great architecture and I love that stone facia. A couple of years ago I built a raised bed for a kitchen garden. It's mostly given over to potatoes during the season, then the rest of the year the herbs come back so I think you will enjoy the convenience. All in all, it looks really good.
